Hawaii remains unranked, at No. 30 in RPI
Last week’s two road victories did nothing to change Hawaii’s standing on Monday, either in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 volleyball poll or the Ratings Percentage Index.
The Rainbow Wahine (16-5, 8-2 Big West) received 19 points in the poll, keeping them at 28th. Hawaii, remaining unranked for the fourth consecutive week, also received 19 points in the previous poll. The top six remained unchanged, led by unbeatens Stanford (22-0), Washington (23-0) and Florida State (23-0). Big West leader Long Beach State (19-4, 9-0) moved up a spot to No. 23.
In the RPI — part of the formula used to seed the NCAA tournament — Hawaii stayed at No. 30 and is the highest rated Big West team. Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge, the two teams to defeat the Wahine in conference play this season, are at 31 and 36.
UH hosts the 49ers and Matadors this week at the Stan Sheriff Center, The Beach on Friday and CSUN on Saturday.
The three teams that beat Hawaii earlier in the season remained ranked in the poll and in the top 32 in the RPI. No. 11 Oregon is seventh in the RPI, No. 15 UCLA 14th and No. 20 Arizona State 32nd.
Aikau surf invitational field announced
Big-wave riding celebrates a special milestone with the 30th annual Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay with a holding period of Dec. 1 through Feb. 28.
The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is a one-day big-wave riding event that only takes place if and when waves meet a 20-foot minimum height during the designated holding period. The official opening ceremony with the Aikau family will be held Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. at Waimea Bay.
"The Eddie" has only been run eight times: its inaugural year at Sunset Beach, and then seven more times at Waimea Bay, including most recently on Dec. 9, 2000, when it was won by California’s Greg Long.
