‘Swords men stun Vulcans with late goal
Senior defender Matt Davies broke a 2-2 deadlock with a header off Austin Bush’s corner kick in the 79th minute to give visiting Chaminade a dramatic victory Thursday over Hawaii Hilo in a Pacific West Conference men’s soccer match.
Chaminade increased its program-high season win total by improving to 5-10 overall and 4-7 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 6-9-2 and 4-6-1.
Goalkeeper Rene Mejia made three saves for the Silverswords in the seasaw battle. Chaminade put six of its eight shots on goal; UH Hilo five of eight.
Nicolas Ferro put Chaminade ahead with a goal at the 11:42 mark, but Maxwell Darris answered for Hawaii Hilo in the 31st minute. The ‘Swords regained the lead after James Meaney’s goal before the half, but the Vulcans’ Mike Reckmeyer tied it in the 78th minute, setting the stage for Davies’ winner.
Hawaii Hilo women prevail in 2OT
Hawaii Hilo’s Abcde Zoeller broke free for an unassisted goal in the 107th minute of play to break a 0-0 stalemate and shock Chaminade in a double-overtime Pacific West Conference women’s soccer match Thursday at Hilo.
The Vulcans (7-4-4 overall, 4-3-4 PacWest) attempted 11 shots in the marathon match, while the Silverswords (3-10-1, 3-7-1) took seven.
Goalkeeper Jenna Hufford stopped three shots on goal for Hawaii Hilo, and Lauren Ishii made five saves for Chaminade.
