Keri Lum had 13 kills and Emily Wada added 11 as Hawaii Baptist swept Hawaii Prep 25-15, 25-12, 25-15 in the quarterfinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II State Championships on Thursday night at Kaimuki High School gym.
HBA (12-2), the ILH champion, will meet MIL champ Seabury Hall (13-0) on Friday at Kaimuki. Seabury Hall swept Kailua 25-17, 25-10, 26-24.
"We’re looking forward to Seabury Hall," Eagles coach Myles Shioji said. "They’re big and they ball handle better than other Seabury teams. They’re well-coached and good volleyball players. Hopefully, we play well tomorrow."
The Eagles, with a 5-foot-7 and under roster, were balanced and relentless against Hawaii Prep (11-6), the BIIF runner-up.
Lum did much of her damage from the left side on feeds from setters Megan Horita (18 assists) and Ally Wada (11 assists). Emily Wada was busy on both sides and added nine digs.
Kaily Lum (four kills) and Madison Tanabe (four) chipped in offensively, while Sara Utsugi led a busy back row with 15 of her team’s 57 digs. Horita added 10 digs, while Ally Wada and Lum added six apiece.
It was a typical Eagles win, gritty on defense and patient on offense. Precise, too. The Eagles hit .257.
"That was a good team win. We try to practice setting consistently, but we also had good passing," Shioji said. "HPA was pretty big in the middle. It was hard for us to get sets there."
Gabbie Ewing, Hawaii Prep’s lone returning starter this season, had team highs of eight kills and 14 digs. Alaina Bradley added three kills. Julia Perry hustled for 10 digs. Elizabeth Jim and Ula Brostek tallied four digs each. Courtney Barro-Kilme had a team-high eight assists.
Ka Makani hit -.021 against the resilient Eagles.
"I’m very proud of them, of how far we’ve come," longtime Ka Makani coach Sharon Peterson said. "A lot of them have never played varsity before this year."
HBA dominated at the start as Ka Makani committed four hitting errors and fell behind 12-1. The Eagles rolled easily in the first set, but things got tight in the second.
Hawaii Prep stayed close and tied it at 9-all on a kill by Ewing. Hawaii Baptist then took command with a 16-3 run. Lum had six kills in the set.
HBA opened the third set with an 8-0 run as Shioji emptied his bench.
The Eagles came into the match well aware of Ewing’s role.
"We knew she would get a lot of sets. We made sure we posted our blocks correctly," Shioji said. "She does a lot for that team. She’s good."
Ewing is also a standout in soccer. She will play at Concordia University next year. Her leadership has been key.
"I feel like they were very open and always ready to learn. We’ve been like sisters," she said. "Of the teams I’ve been on, this one has improved the most."
SEABURY HALL 3, KAILUA 0
The second-seeded Spartans (13-0), ranked No. 8 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, got 13 kills from Shayla Hoeft and seven apiece from Sophie Janssen and Amy Ozee in a 25-17, 25-10, 26-24 over Kailua.
Gabby Ratte and Savy Janssen tallied 13 assists each, and Phoebe Fickbohm had a team-high seven digs.
Seabury finished with a .365 hitting percentage.
Amber Tai paced Kailua (7-9) with seven kills.
KONAWAENA 3, LA PIETRA 1
Chanelle Molina had 24 kills and McKenna Ventura added 15 kills as the top-seeded Wildcats defeated the Panthers 25-23, 22-25, 30-28, 25-23.
Molina also had 23 digs and Ventura had 19 assists for the defending D-II champion Wildcats (16-0), ranked No. 4 in the Star-Advertiser top 10.
Konawaena will face Kalaheo in Friday’s 5 p.m. semifinal at Kaimuki.
Jessica Akiona had 20 kills and Peri Green added 16 for La Pietra (10-7).
KALAHEO 3, ST. FRANCIS 1
Syenna Masaki had 14 kills and Riley Lynch put down 12 as the fourth-seeded Mustangs beat the Saints 26-28, 26-24, 25-22, 27-25.
Masaki added 14 assists and 15 digs for the Mustangs (10-4). Siani Yamaguchi also had a triple-double in the win with 25 assists, 14 digs and 11 kills.
St. Francis served for the set at 24-23 and 25-24 in Set 4. Masaki tied it at 24 but the Saints went ahead. Violet Subee’s kill tied it at 25 and Masaki’s kill put the Mustangs at match point. A St. Francis hitting error ended the match.
Malia-Luis Mateo had 21 kills and Alyssa Panis added 18 for the Saints (11-4).
