Seasiders sweep Silverswords
Senior All-American hitter Shih Ting "Stella" Chen put down 18 kills and Lacey Miyahira Lange added 14 to lead No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 27-25, 25-16, 25-16 victory over Chaminade in the PacWest volleyball regular-season finale for both teams at McCabe Gym.
Chen finished with her 17th double-double of the season with 10 digs. The Seasiders (21-5, 18-2), who clinched its fifth straight conference title Friday, will find out its NCAA D-II West Regional opponent during Sunday’s selection show.
Ku’ulei Lynch and Regina Johnson each had six kills for the Silverswords (12-18, 5-15).
» Pomai Recca had a match-high 21 kills and Elizabeth Culpepper added 16 to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 25-22, 28-30, 25-13, 25-21 win over Hawaii Hilo in the PacWest volleyball season-ender for both teams at St. Andrew’s Priory Gym.
Amanda Moriarty had 23 digs and Recca added 16 for the Sharks (15-11, 13-7). Callie Berle had 18 kills and Shelby Harquess 14 for the Vulcans (9-14, 8-12).
HPU opens season with win
Luke Hager scored 14 points and Hawaii Pacific used a balanced scoring attack to top Regis 73-58 in its men’s basketball season opener Saturday afternoon at Moanalua High.
Hager added 10 rebounds for the Sharks (1-0) who also got 13 points from Clayton Guy and 11 each from Darry Jones Jr. and Justin Long. Dylan King led the Rangers (0-2) with 17 points.
» Tre Johnson went 10-for-15 from the floor en route to a game-high 24 points and Joey Rodriguez added 16 but it was not enough as Hawaii Hilo (1-1) lost 84-73 to Western Washington (2-0) in the Chuck Randall Classic men’s basketball tournament Saturday in Bellingham, Wash.
HPU can’t hold on against CWU
Central Washington used an 8-0 closing run over the final 3 minutes to defeat Hawaii Pacific 68-63 in the Northwest Nazarene Tip-Off Women’s Basketball Classic in Nampa, Idaho.
Morganne Comstock scored 22 points and Kylie Huerta added 15 for the Sharks (1-1) who led the 63-60 with 2:35.
» Glace Forita scored 14 points and Kristie Henry added 10 but Chaminade (0-2) was unable to overcome a 44-20 halftime deficit when falling to host Alaska Anchorage (2-0) in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge women’s basketball tournament game Saturday.
Wahine win alumnae game
Heather Morales’ fourth-inning home run highlighted the University of Hawaii softball team’s offensive outburst and the Rainbow Wahine closed fall practice with an 11-1 win in their alumnae game on Saturday.
Former UH standout Kate Robinson held the Wahine scoreless into the fourth inning before Leisha Li’ili’i drove in Keiki Carlos with an RBI single and Morales followed with her two-run homer to center in a five-run rally. Freshman Brittany Hitchcock held the alumnae to one hit over four innings and earned the win at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The alumnae broke the shutout in the sixth on Jenna Rodriguez’ RBI double to score Robinson.
