Hawaii, the top blocking team in Big West volleyball, blocked out the upset bid by Cal Poly on Saturday night, pulling out a 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-16 victory at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Sophomore hitter Nikki Taylor and senior Kalei Adolpho each were in on 11 blocks, with Taylor finishing with the program’s first triple-double in the rally-scoring era (10 kills, 10 digs, 11 blocks) and Adolpho a double-double (11 kills, 11 blocks). Adding to the balanced attack were freshman Kalei Greeley’s 11 kills and junior middle Olivia Magill’s 10 kills with just one hitting error for the Rainbow Wahine (19-6, 11-3 Big West) against the Mustangs (9-16, 4-11).
"A triple-double is hard to get in volleyball, it’s really something," Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said. "Nikki probably played her best all-around match of the year.
"And our block really kicked in. Those are easy points when you can block balls."
Hawaii’s total was half a block off the season-high 20 that came in a four-set win over St. John’s on Sept. 6. Eleven came in Set 3, including seven when the Wahine opened a 10-1 lead.
When Hawaii reached 10 blocks, the lead was 19-6. The 11th put the Wahine up 2-1 in sets, with Adolpho teaming with junior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao to deny Taylor Gruenewald.
"That (set) probably turned the match," Shoji said. "Of course it was a concern when we lost the first set. Cal Poly played really well and we had no answer no matter what we did. You have to give them a lot of credit.

KEY: The Rainbow Wahine show off their big block to fend off an upset bid. NEXT: UH vs. UC Riverside on Friday and UC Davis on Saturday. |
"They are a very young team (sometimes with five freshman starters) and they couldn’t sustain it."
Gruenewald led the Mustangs with 16 kills and Raeann Greisen added 15.
Hawaii can finish no higher than second place in the Big West, ending a streak of 19 consecutive championships dating back to a second-place finish in 1994. Long Beach State (24-4, 14-0) clinched its 13th Big West title Saturday night with a sweep of UC Riverside.
Cal Poly outdug Hawaii 43-36 in Set 1 but finished with just a 74-73 edge. Wahine senior libero Sarah Mendoza finished with 20 digs and sophomore setter Tayler Higgins 17. Mustang libero Nicole Kessler had a match-high 25.
The Wahine finish out the regular season with home matches against UC Riverside on Friday and UC Davis on Saturday. The NCAA Selection Show is on Nov. 30.
