A high-surf advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday for the north and west shores of Niihau and Kauai and north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui as a large north-northwest swell passes through the island chain.
Forecasters predict surf along north shores to reach 10 to 15 feet. West shores could see surf of 8 to 12 feet.
Oceangoers are warned to expect strong breaking waves, shorebreak and strong currents that could make swimming dangerous.
Kauai Ocean Safety officials are advising no swimming at all on North Shore beaches due to the potentially hazardous conditions.
The swell, in combination with strong northerly winds behind a cold front, further prompted a small-craft advisory effective through 6 a.m. Tuesday for most marine zones. The wind is expected to veer northeast Tuesday but remain strong, likely resulting in the advisory being extended for typical windy zones around Maui and Hawaii island, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile a high-pressure system northwest of Hawaii island is expected to bring cooler, drier conditions across the state through the middle of the week. Locally strong north-to-northeast tradewinds are expected.
The tradewind weather pattern will continue through Thursday, according to the weather service. Low-level moisture will return in the latter half of the week.
Forecasters predict a "slight boost" in windward and mauka showers by Friday, although rainfall is expected to be relatively light.
Tradewinds could strengthen slightly by the end of the week as high pressure builds north of the state.
The weather service also reported an upper-level trough moving in a southeasterly direction across the state at 15 mph Monday, generating powerful winds in the summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
A wind advisory is in effect for the summit areas of Hawaii island through 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Forecasters predict westerly wind of 30 to 50 mph, with localized gusts of greater than 60 mph.
The weather service warns that high winds can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile cars. Motorists are advised to use extra caution when driving.
