Lady Vulcans earn first win
McKenzie Mangino scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second half to lead the Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team in a 66-58 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday at McKinley High School.
Danielle Kooyman just missed a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. With the halftime score tied at 30, the Vulcans (1-3) connected on 14 of 27 shots from the field to edge the Spartans (2-3). Kristen Olsen finished with a game-high 19 points for St. Thomas Aquinas.
»â€ˆChaminade dropped its final game of the 2014 Oahu Thanksgiving Classic with an 89-64 loss to Montana State-Billings (5-2) on Friday at McKinley High School. Katie Buskey led the Silverswords (0-4) with 13 points in the loss.
Two Yellow Jackets posted double-doubles in the win. Senior Kayleen Goggins recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Alisha Breen finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
HPU survives, nets ‘Black Friday’ win
The Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team improved to 3-1 with a 62-57 victory over Carleton College on Friday at Moanalua High School.
Justin Long led the Sharks with 17 points, while Darry Jones Jr. chipped in 14 points. Luke Hager posted his third double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for HPU against the Division III Knights (1-1).
The Sharks held a slim 56-55 advantage with less than two minutes to play before Long drove hard to the basket and scored with 1:15 remaining. After a Carleton turnover, the visitors were forced to foul, and Jones clinched the victory by hitting four free throws in a 20-second span.
HPU opens PacWest play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts BYU-Hawaii at Neal Blaisdell Arena.
