Kealoha begins his second term as police chief
Chief Louis Kealoha was sworn in last week to serve another five-year term as head of the Honolulu Police Department.
He has been chief of police since November 2009.
Kealoha was reappointed to a second five-year term by the Honolulu Police Commission.
His first term ended Thursday.
Kealoha joined the department in 1983.
Over the past two years, the commission has rated Kealoha’s performance as "exceeds expectations," according to a news release issued by the commission.
Body of hiker found in river in Waipio Valley
Hawaii island fire rescue personnel recovered the body of a missing hiker in a river leading to Hiilawe Falls on Sunday.
The hiker, described as a 22-year-old woman, was last seen on a trail leading to the falls at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The woman was hiking with a group of friends in Wai­pio Valley when she became separated.
The body was found in about 5 feet of water approximately 200 yards above the abandoned teahouse restaurant.
Firefighters airlifted the body from the area.
Truck hits and injures moped rider
A moped rider sustained life-threatening injuries Sunday after he was hit by a truck in Makawao, Maui police said.
The rider, a 36-year-old Makawao man, was struck by a Toyota pickup traveling south on Olinda Road near Kehau Place at about 1:09 a.m., police said.
The moped rider was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The pickup driver was not hurt.
Shark sighting spurs closing of Hilo beach
Hawaii island authorities closed Richardson Beach in Hilo on Sunday after a 6-foot shark was seen in the area, police said.
Police said firefighters spotted the shark at about noon and estimated it was 6 feet long but couldn’t determine its type. The beach was reopened at 3 p.m.
