Johnson nets Player of the Week honor
Hawaii Hilo guard Tre Johnson was named PacWest Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday based on games played Nov. 24-30.
Johnson feasted on the opposition during Thanksgiving week, averaging 21 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as Hawaii Hilo won three of its four games.
The junior from Reno, Nev., had a season-high 27 points against Seattle Pacific, shooting 8-for-9 from the field and making 10 free throws. Johnson finished off the week with a double-double effort of 22 points and 11 rebounds against Carleton. Johnson is second in the PacWest in scoring, averaging 22.0 points per game.
HPU duo earns weekly awards
Hawaii Pacific guards Chenise Peone and Breanna Mackenzie were named PacWest Defender of the Week and Freshman of the Week for their performances from Nov. 24-30.
Peone guided HPU to a pair of wins, averaging 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game. The senior from Inchelium, Wash. had 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks against Montana State Billings. She then had a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds, along with four steals, against St. Thomas Aquinas. Peone is fourth in the conference in steals (2.2 spg).
Mackenzie won her second weekly honor of the season by averaging 10 points per game for the Sharks. The native of Melbourne, Australia, had 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in her squad’s win over St. Thomas Aquinas. She leads all PacWest freshmen in scoring (10.2 ppg).
