Honolulu City Lights ornaments available
The 2014 ornaments celebrating the Honolulu City Lights tradition are available for purchase.
A snowflake design commemorates the 30th anniversary of Honolulu City Lights, while a "holoholo" ornament honors Hokule‘a’s around-the-world voyage by depicting Santa aboard a sailing canoe.
The annual Honolulu City Lights ornaments, first offered in 2000, are designed by Owen Ho, who also created the Shaka Santa that sits outside Honolulu Hale. The ornaments can be purchased for $18 at Macy’s on Oahu, Oahu branches of First Hawaiian Bank, or through honolulucitylights.org.
Honolulu City Lights opening festivities run from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday. For more information, see Friday’s TGIF.
Washington Place to hold open house
The Washington Place Foundation is hosting its traditional Christmas Open House on Dec. 19.
The open house at the historic home was started in 1858 by Mary Dominis, widow of Capt. John Dominis, who built Washington Place. Mary Dominis gave a Christmas Eve party for 100 Honolulu families, sparking the tradition.
Visitors will take a guided tour through the 167-year-old home to learn more about that party and the Christmas trees of Washington Place, including a tree reminiscent of the 1858 tree that Mary Dominis grew from a sprig. Also on view will be a Christmas tree that honors the children of the Queen Lili‘uokalani Trust.
The event is 5:30 to 8 p.m. and includes Christmas music performed by the St. Andrew’s Cathedral Choir. Reservations are required; call 586-0248 by Dec. 18. A $5 donation to the foundation is suggested for adults. Proceeds go toward preservation and programs at Washington Place. Parking will be available at the state Department of Health, 1250 Punchbowl St.
