High-surf advisory extended on 5 islands
The National Weather Service has extended a high-surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui through early Saturday morning.
A previous high-surf advisory for east-facing shores was canceled.
Forecasters predict wave heights of 12 to 18 feet along affected shores. The public is advised to expect strong breaking waves and strong currents that could make swimming dangerous.
Arizona gov to visit Pearl Harbor events
PHOENIX » Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is in Hawaii to attend ceremonies marking the 73rd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
The governor plans to attend Sunday’s memorial at Pearl Harbor, visit the sunken hulk of the USS Arizona and then make a visit to a modern warship named for an Arizona city, the attack submarine USS Tucson. She also plans to meet with some of the nine surviving USS Arizona sailors.
Brewer took part in the ceremony last year marking the anniversary of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack that sunk the Arizona and numerous other warships and killed about 2,400 sailors, Marines and soldiers. Of those, 1,177 were on the Arizona when it exploded after being hit by Japanese bombs.
