Hager and Friel net weekly honors
Hawaii Pacific forward Luke Hager and BYU-Hawaii guard Scott Friel were named Player of the Week and Defender of the Week by the PacWest on Monday.
Hager, a junior from Chicago, continued to make a big impact in his first season with the Sharks and is averaging 26 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He shot 66.7 percent from the field (18-for-27) last week and notched a career-high 28 points against the Seasiders via nine field goals and 10 free throws. He followed that effort with 24 points in an overtime win over UH Hilo, again making nine field goals.
Hager ranks fourth in the PacWest in scoring (20 ppg), fifth in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and eighth in field-goal percentage (52.4 percent).
Friel, a junior from Riverton, Utah, helped No. 23 BYU-Hawaii to a pair of wins to keep the squad undefeated at 6-0. He averaged 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game and posted 10 rebounds and four steals against HPU.
Friel has grabbed double-digit boards in four games this season and ranks fourth in the PacWest with 9 rebounds per game.
McKenna claims All-American status
Hawaii Pacific senior Fiona McKenna achieved All-American status by posting a top-40 finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.
McKenna finished in sixth place with a mark of 21 minutes, 25.8 seconds, the best championship performance in the history of HPU’s cross country program. The two-time PacWest Runner of the Year was the second competitor to cross the line among those representing the West Region and finished five seconds behind the reigning regional champion, Western Washington’s Katelyn Steen.
Runners battled difficult conditions as rain and mud shortened the women’s course from 6 kilometers to 5.78.
