At long last, Shawna-Lei Kuehu is a member of Hawaii’s 1,000-point club.
The sixth-year Rainbow Wahine senior reached the milestone while scoring 15 points in a 92-40 blowout of Brigham Young-Hawaii on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kuehu needed exactly 15 points to get to 1,000. She got off to a slow start, but scored 13 in the second half and was awarded the game ball.
She connected on a three-point play with 10:37 to go, giving her 15. Players on the Wahine bench jumped up in celebration and her feat was announced to and then applauded by the crowd of 661. Her teammate and good friend, Ashleigh Karaitiana, gave her a hug. Kuehu’s night was done.
She is the 10th Rainbow Wahine player to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career.
UH (5-4) built a 33-point lead by halftime in avoiding its first four-game losing streak under third-year coach Laura Beeman.
Dalayna Sampton had a game-high 16 points, Karaitiana scored 11 and Sarah Toeaina added 10 for UH.
BYUH (3-3) committed turnovers on its first four possessions of the second half and the rout continued unabated.
For the game, the hosts shot 62.3 percent from the field and held BYUH to 22 percent.
The 52-point margin of victory tied for the third-highest in program history.
It concluded a seven-game homestand as the Rainbow Wahine head to road games at Loyola Marymount and Cal State Bakersfield next week.
All 14 players suited up for UH played, and 13 scored. Newcomers Raja Moreno-Ross and Jasmine Redmon scored their first points as Wahine.
BYUH’s top playmaker, Celeste Claw, missed the game with concussion-like symptoms. The Seasiders struggled to generate coherent offense without her.
