A long run, and an even longer flight
Once again, the Honolulu Marathon proved its credentials as an international event, especially in the elite class of runners. Of the top 10 finishers, six were from Kenya, two were Ethiopians and two flew in from Japan.
Their commitment to athletic training is apparent, but how about the financial commitment? Just using one of the airfare search engines as an estimate, the Kenyan contingent spent $15,426, the Ethiopians shelled out $5,868 and the Japanese handed over $3,578 for their airplane tickets alone. Welcome, happy road warriors from faraway places!
Sensible harvesting limits could help Kauai fishery
Ensuring that the ocean is not overharvested with impunity is the right instinct. That’s what the state Board of Land and Natural Resources is trying to do with its nearly-there rules for Kauai’s Haena Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area. The area’s proposed rules include bans on commercial harvests, spear guns and night fishing; a two-fishing-pole limit for each fisherman; and bag limits on lobster, urchin and octopus.
A formal opposition request by two commercial fishermen was denied Friday. Now, all that remains is the governor’s OK — and public education.
