Motorcyclist critically hurt in Wahiawa
A man in his 20s was critically injured Tuesday morning when his motorcycle slammed into a stopped pickup truck in Wahiawa.
Police Lt. Carlene Lau said speed appeared to be a factor, and that the roadway was dark and wet.
The accident occurred at about 6:05 a.m. near the McNair Gate to Schofield Barracks.
The motorcyclist was headed north on Wilikina Drive near the gate when he lost control and slid into the back of a stopped Toyota Tacoma.
The pickup truck was pushed into the back of a car that was stopped in front of it, police said.
The motorcyclist was taken in critical condition to a hospital. No one else was injured, police said.
A northbound lane on Wilikina Drive was contraflowed as police investigated and cleared the scene.
5 rescued after kayaks flip in rough surf
An Ocean Safety Division watercraft crew rescued five kayakers who were in distress off the Mokulua Islands on Tuesday.
The kayakers, five adult members of a family visiting from California, got caught in the surf, causing the kayaks to flip, said Shayne Enright, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman.
The conditions were windy and the surf was choppy, she said.
The kayakers were brought by watercraft to shore in Lanikai. No medical treatment was needed.
Enright said ocean conditions should be checked with lifeguards before venturing out.

The Hawaii County Fire Department continued its search Tuesday. Fire crews have used a rescue boat, two helicopters and rescue divers to search the surface and below.
The Coast Guard began its search Sunday and covered approximately 219 square miles before suspending efforts at sunset Monday.
