Rogers Printup scored all 10 of his points in the first half before taking a rest as Orange Lutheran (Calif.) cruised past Kaiser 71-34 on Wednesday in opening-round play of the ‘Iolani Classic.
Printup, a commit to UC Davis, hit two treys in the first half as the Lancers used a balanced attack to zoom ahead 43-9. C.J. Hankins had a team-high 12 points and Zack Jervis hustled for eight points. The Lancers looked crisp and fresh.
"We were able to get here yesterday and get in the gym," coach Chris Nordstrom said.
They showed patience and quick ball movement against Kaiser’s 2-3 zone.
"This group, in particular, is good about finding their open teammate. We took good shots and we did a nice job defensively."
Chance Kalaugher had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Kaiser. Kelsey Lewis II also scored 11.
"Their pressure defensively took us out of what we wanted to do," Kaiser coach Branden Kawazoe said. "The speed of the game, how fast their guys close gaps, it’s the first time our guys have seen a team play that physical and fast."
Orange Lutheran’s full-court man defense was tough, and its half-court traps took a toll on the Cougars. Kaiser had 14 turnovers.
The visitors were just 4-for-14 from the 3-point arc in the first half, but they crashed the boards and collected nine offensive caroms, cashing in most times. Keisean Lucier-South, a 6-foot-6 senior, and 6-6 Kavaughn Scott combined for six offensive rebounds in the first half.
Scott finished with a team-high nine boards.
"(Lucier-South) might be the best athlete I’ve ever coached," Nordstrom said of the UCLA-bound linebacker.
By the third quarter, both teams had their reserves in.
Kaiser will play Fuxin of China. The New Star feature a versatile 6-8 sophomore, Baiquin Zhao, who scored 19 of their 22 points in a loss to Miller Grove (Ga.) on Tuesday.
"It’s going to get better. Every game, every possession, we want to get better," Kawazoe said.
The Lancers got a look at their next opponent, Miller Grove.
"It’s a great opportunity to play these kinds of teams," Nordstrom said.
