Alec MacLeod didn’t have his biggest scoring night of the season, but the Kalaheo senior delivered the decisive basket in the Mustangs’ victory over top-ranked Punahou on Tuesday.
After Kalaheo guard Kaleb Gilmore’s shot bounced off the rim, MacLeod’s putback with one second left lifted the fourth-ranked Mustangs to a 41-40 win over the host Buffanblu in the championship game of the Punahou Invitational.
"Coach told me just to sprint down the court as fast as I could so I’d be there for the putback and I was in the right place at the right time," said MacLeod, who finished with four points.
"Kaleb made a nice drive and I was hustling back and it felt real good."
Punahou had rallied from a four-point deficit with 32.1 seconds left and took a 40-39 lead on two Justin Kam free throws with 8.6 seconds showing on the Hemmeter Fieldhouse clock.
Following a timeout, Gilmore drove the length of the floor and his scoop came off the rim and into MacLeod’s hands for the game-winner.
"That’s what he does, he hits the offensive glass hard," Kalaheo coach Alika Smith said.
Gilmore led Kalaheo with 13 points. Dayson Watanabe led Punahou with 12 points.
