BYU-Hawaii women rain 3s in victory
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s basketball team went 10-for-19 from the behind the 3-point line and outrebounded Fresno Pacific 48-18 en route to an 88-70 victory Tuesday in a Pacific West Conference game at Cannon Activities Center.
Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo led four BYU-Hawaii players in double figures with 20 points. Celeste Claw had 16 and Marquessa Gilson 13. Whitney Fieldsted added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Seasiders improved to 6-5 overall, 3-2 in the PacWest. Jenay Herring scored 16 points for the Sunbirds (2-8, 2-3).
» A quick start enabled the Chaminade women’s basketball team to take a 12-point lead early in the first half, but the Silverswords could not hold, falling to Dixie State 75-68 on Tuesday at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords led 38-34 at halftime, but the Red Storm surged ahead with a 16-2 run. Leslie Tademy and Taylor Mann each scored 16 points for Dixie State (4-9, 4-3 PacWest). Kennedi Akana and Lilia Maio had 14-point efforts for the Silverswords (0-9, 0-5).
UH staff holding baseball coaches clinic
University of Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso and his staff will host a free coaches clinic Saturday at the University of Hawaii Maui College campus.
The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Check-in is at 9:30 a.m. in the Kalama Building, Room 103. The clinic is open to baseball coaches of all levels looking to learn coaching skills and techniques to develop youth talent. In accordance with NCAA rules, the UH coaching staff is not allowed to meet with high school players or their parents at this time.
3 commit to HPU volleyball team
Hawaii Pacific University women’s volleyball coach Daryl Kapis announced the signings of Kamehameha defensive specialist Kennedy Poligratis, setter/outside hitter Mali Sawyer and middle hitter Carson Pyle.
Poligratis helped her Team Piko Ho‘omau Volleyball Club take 10th place in Junior Nationals her freshman year and finish as the top team in the 17-American Division Pacific Northwest National Qualifier.
Sawyer, from Eagle (Idaho) High School, was a first-team all-conference player in 2013 and 2014.
Pyle attends Memorial High School in Houston and is a member of the Houston Skyline Juniors. Pyle was an Academic All-State selection from 2012 to 2014, and on the court she was awarded team MVP in 2014 and the most valuable hitter for her district while leading the team in kills during the 2013 season. In club, she was awarded the silver medal at the Junior Nationals and was ranked in the Fab 50 in the region by VYPE Magazine in 2014.
