The Wolensky family, all five of them, are quick to point out they love living in Hawaii. Going to the beach. Sailing off Waikiki. Barbecuing at sunset.
But they have a problem that may explain why they want to be outdoors so much: Their 40-year-old Hawaii Kai home is so old and dilapidated that it’s falling down around them.
They found a solution in the DIY Network’s reality show "Family Under Construction," which chronicled the family’s efforts to remodel their Koko Isle home.
Alan Wolensky, 54, a producer at Pacific Network TV who also works in the tourism industry, put his wife and three children to work on the project, which resulted in six episodes. It was a learning experience for everyone, he said.
"They called me Demo Daddy," he said. "I do the jackhammering. I do the lifting. I do the plaster mixing. I learned how to weld on the show."
The first and second episodes air starting 2 p.m. Saturday with the third and fourth episodes starting at the same time Jan. 17. The entire series will air Jan. 24 with an encore showing Jan. 30.
