What a difference three weeks can make.
The Kamehameha Warriors know that after avenging a wipeout loss to No. 6 ‘Iolani by edging the Raiders 58-53 on Saturday.
Freshman Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk scored 13 points, including 5-for-6 shooting at the free-throw line in the wild fourth quarter, and senior Shantel Aleki tallied 11 points and eight rebounds for the ninth-ranked Warriors.
‘Iolani made a game of it, rallying from a 19-point deficit to within 52-51 on Sierra Buscher’s putback with 1:15 to play. Kamehameha put the game away on free throws by Aleki, Nalani-Tearsjah Aipolani-Tuaoi-Tootoo and Paaluhi-Caulk.
‘Iolani routed Kamehameha 55-36 on Dec. 20 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium.
"We were prepared for their perimeter offense this time," Warriors coach Joseph Cho said. "Knowing they like to drive and kick."
The win at ‘Iolani’s gym evened Kamehameha’s record at 3-3 in the brutally tough ILH. More importantly, it validated coach Cho’s mantra and willingness to adapt.
"It was about determination and hard work," the first-year Warriors coach said. "And me finally learning who should be playing and who should come off the bench."
Not so long ago, Paaluhi-Caulk was one of those benchwarmers. On Saturday, the freshman was vital at the point when sophomore Mikiala Maio got into foul trouble.
As a team, Kamehameha was dominant on the boards with a 35-17 edge. It was especially pronounced in the first half with a resounding 19-7 advantage. Cho had his team running the floor and attacking without hesitation. The visitors wowed their following of about 100 fans by opening an 18-7 lead with six early points by the highly versatile Aleki.
In all, Kamehameha went on a 21-10 run, pushing hard on the break and clamping down on the Raiders’ long-range shooters.
Maio was impressive in transition, with four of her team-high five assists during the second quarter as Kamehameha surged to a 37-20 lead shortly before the half.
With the long arms of Brooke Kaawa making a big difference defensively, ‘Iolani shot 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in the second quarter.
Kamehameha took its biggest lead, 41-22, on a hustling follow shot by Kaawa in the third quarter. The lead was 18 points early in the fourth quarter when ‘Iolani’s constant full-court pressure — and Maio’s foul trouble — took a toll on the Warriors, who committed six of their 12 turnovers in the fourth quarter.
Sheyla Kahalehoe connected on two long-range bombs and scored 10 of her team-high 12 points as the Raiders made a frenzied comeback. A steal by Buscher, who scored a moment later on a follow shot, made it 52-51, capping a 29-11 run.
‘Iolani ran out of gas and went cold from that point, missing every shot from near and far as the Warriors regained composure and put the game away at the foul line.
For the game, Kamehameha shot 17-for-26 at the charity stripe. ‘Iolani was 15-for-23.
