Authorities work on sunken ship’s diesel
Authorities were working to contain a diesel fuel spill from a 77-foot fishing vessel that sank Sunday in Honolulu Harbor.
The Coast Guard said it and the state Department of Transportation’s Harbors Division were responding to the spill from an abandoned fishing vessel that sank.
The vessel Judy K was reported to be sinking at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Pier 16, the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard said it deployed approximately 150 feet of containment boom as well as absorbent pads to deal with the spill. About 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the water before the containment boom was put into place.
Boaters were being cautioned to watch for possible debris from the sunken ship at the entrance to Honolulu Harbor.
Police on case 1 year after woman vanishes
WAILUKU » Monday marked the anniversary of the disappearance of a Maui woman, and police say they’re actively pursuing the case.
The Maui News reported Monday that Moreira Monsalve, 46, was last seen at about 10 p.m. Jan. 12, 2014, at her ex-boyfriend’s home in Wailuku.
A purse and other belongings of the mother of three were found in an industrial trash bin outside the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center.
The Maui Police Department continues to be assisted by the FBI, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Honolulu police and other agencies on this case.
Kauai police seek help in fugitive search
Kauai police are asking for the public’s help in locating a fugitive.
Akira Obatake, 33, of Kauai is wanted by the U.S. marshals for charges relating to narcotics and firearms, according to a Kauai County news release Monday. He is also wanted for failing to report to the federal prison in Lompoc, Calif., to serve a 10-year sentence.
Obatake is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 165 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
