Consolidated to open new Kapolei theater
Consolidated Theatres will open an eight-screen movie theater facility at the Ka Makana Alii mall being developed in Kapolei.
The new theater will be the company’s second in Kapolei, its ninth in Hawaii and its first new facility since 2001 when its 16-screen theater opened at the Ward Entertainment Center.
Consolidated’s 16-screen theater in Kapolei is at 890 Kamokila Blvd. in the Kapolei Entertainment Center. No information about the older theater’s fate was given in the announcement about the new facility.
Consolidated rival Regal Entertainment announced in July that it plans to build a 12-screen theater at Kapolei Commons, one block away from Consolidated’s first Kapolei location.
Including the new theater, the first phase of the 1.4 million-square-foot Ka Makana Alii being built by DeBartolo Development is slated to open next year.

November job openings hit 14-year high
WASHINGTON » The rapid hiring that made 2014 a stellar year for job gains is showing no sign of slowing down.
U.S. employers advertised the most job openings in nearly 14 years in November, the Labor Department said Tuesday. That suggests businesses are determined to keep adding staff because they are confident strong economic growth will create more demand for their goods and services.
Job openings rose 2.9 percent to 4.97 million in November, the most since January 2001. More job vacancies generally lead to more hiring. Employers have been slow to fill their openings for most of the recovery, but that started to change last year as companies ramped up their overall hiring.
Airbus, Boeing split annual sales rivalry
FRANKFURT, Germany » Boeing Co. topped Airbus in deliveries to customers for the third straight year in 2014 — but the European aircraft manufacturer edged its U.S. rival in terms of future orders.
Airbus, which is headquartered in Toulouse, France, reported Tuesday that it delivered 629 planes, shy of Boeing’s record 723 deliveries. But Airbus racked up 1,456 net new orders, just ahead of Boeing’s 1,432. New orders are key to future market share.
Airbus and Boeing, which is based in Chicago and builds planes in the Seattle area and South Carolina, have built up huge order books as profitable airlines look to refresh their fleets.
Japan approves record $814B budget
TOKYO » Japan’s Cabinet approved a record $814 billion government budget for the coming fiscal year Wednesday after a tax hike to accommodate rising outlays for social security and defense.
Rising revenues following April’s sales tax increase enabled Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to raise spending without increasing the proportion financed by new government bonds, though the total national debt is still about twice the size of the economy. Abe’s government must tread a fine line between spending enough to support growth and slowing the rise in debt, which is the highest, proportionately, among industrialized countries.
