Nene gosling found dead at Maui camp
MAKAWAO, Maui » The nesting nene family that prompted the closure of a Maui campground has lost its young gosling.
Haleakala National Park officials closed the Hosmer Grove campground and trail Friday to protect the family of endangered Hawaiian geese. Park Chief of Interpretation Pauline Angelakis says when workers tried to move the family to a safer location Saturday morning, they found the gosling was dead.
The gosling was less than 2 weeks old. A necropsy will be done to determine why it died.
Hosmer Grove reopened Saturday.
Last month a nesting nene was struck and killed by a car at the park.
Kauai agency schedules water shutdown
The Kauai Department of Water has scheduled a shutdown Thursday for residents on the western side of Wawae Road in Kalaheo, between Puuwai and Kikala roads, so a contractor can connect a new waterline to the Kalaheo system.
Water will be turned off from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting.
The department will provide a water tank on Wawae Road, near the intersection of Puuwai Road, for essential needs during the shutdown. Customers will have to bring their own containers.
After the connection is completed and the water main is turned back on, air might be mixed into the water, causing it to appear white or milky in color. This is normal and the air eventually will dissipate, county officials said.
