Streb keeping his cool
FedEx Cup points leader Robert Streb isn’t going to turn heads when he’s walking down the fairway.
Much like Jimmy Walker was when he led the FedEx Cup race at this point a year ago, Streb is flying under the radar as far as national recognition. He won at McGladrey — one of the six wraparound events on the PGA Tour — in a playoff in late October and finished in a tie for eighth at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions last weekend on Maui. He is tied for eighth at 8 under at the Sony Open in Hawaii, three shots in back of second-round leaders Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Justin Thomas.
"I was kind of hacking it today," Streb said. "Today was much more of a struggle, but the last three holes were a big help.
"Obviously, I’m not scrambling to keep my job at this point, but trying to work on my temperament and be a little more even keel."
Knox sticking around this time
Russell Knox hadn’t seen a weekend at Waialae in three trips to Hawaii. Not only did he avoid going 0-for-4 this time around, but will go into Saturday among the contenders at 9 under.
"I told my wife if we miss the cut I was probably never coming back," Knox said. "It was great I made the cut because I love this course, I love the people here and the weather, of course, and I’m glad I played well and I hope it can continue."
Knox hadn’t played all that poorly in his previous Sony Open appearances, with a 69.83 stroke average over six rounds. But hovering around even par usually doesn’t get you a Saturday tee time.
Knox opened his fourth attempt with a 66 and followed with a bogey-free 65 on Friday. If he stays on track, he could be in position to earn another trip.
"The goal is to have two weeks in Hawaii next year," Knox said.
Every disqualified for bent club
Matt Every was disqualified on Friday for having a bent 4-iron in his bag. He bent it during Thursday’s opening round and forgot to take it out. He alerted a rules official halfway through the second round when he noticed it in the bag. He was 1 over for his round after nine when he turned himself in and 5 over for the tournament.
Inside the numbers
Thomas, a PGA Tour rookie, missed Davis Love III’s tournament record of 60 by a single shot on Friday en route to joining Kuchar and Simpson at the top of the leaderboard.
Since 2007, four golfers who led after the second round have gone on to win the tournament. They are Russell Henley in 2013, Ryan Palmer (2010), K.J. Choi (2008) and Paul Goydos (2007).
