Hawaii residents know about serving justice
Honolulu civil rights attorney Eric Seitz left town last week to be at a ceremony Saturday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, founded by former slaves, in Blue Mountain, Miss.
The connection is Seitz’ alma mater, Oberlin College, which was being honored for its help with the church in 1964.
Seitz and other alumni from the school, noted for its activism, were invited to see the placement of a historical marker. Oberlin students had attended a voter registration rally at the church, which was firebombed afterward and burned to the ground.
Seitz was one of the former students being honored for volunteer work in rebuilding the church on Christmas break.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it’s a fitting tribute to the many who worked for justice at the time — and a reminder of how much that work was needed.
