The University of Hawaii football team is set to add a four-star receiver.
DeSean Holmes of Bishop Alemany High (Mission Hills, Calif.) is projected to add oomph to the Warriors’ renovated offense.
In July, Holmes made an oral commitment to accept a football scholarship from USC. But in December, he announced he was "de-committing," opening the recruiting process.
Arizona State, Fresno State, Mississippi State Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon State, UCLA, Utah, Washington and Washington State were among the schools to offer scholarships.
But Holmes said he likes the UH coaches, particularly head coach Norm Chow and defensive line coach Lewis Powell, who served as point recruiter.
Holmes also has played baseball and basketball.
But he said his passion is football, which he began playing when he was 6.
He said his uncle, Darick Holmes, served as his first football tutor. Darick Holmes is a former NFL running back with the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts.
"He helped me a lot," DeSean Holmes said. "He definitely was an inspiration."
Holmes said he is 5 feet 10 and 169 pounds. He said his "fastest" time in the 40-yard dash was 4.45 seconds.
Several recruiting services, including Rivals.com, gave Holmes a four-star ranking after he averaged nearly 20 yards per catch as an Alemany junior in 2013.
Holmes said Chow made a home visit on Wednesday. Holmes and his mother depart Thursday morning for the 48-hour recruiting trip to Hawaii.
Holmes is on track to meet the NCAA requirements to play as a freshman this coming season.
"I like to eat, sleep and work out," Holmes said of his non-football and non-academic activities.
