Maybe it was the extra adrenaline of Senior Night.
The Roosevelt Rough Riders put all of it to good use on Thursday night, pulling away from a pesky Kaiser squad for a 61-43 win before a robust, near-capacity crowd at Roosevelt.
With another successful night, No. 2 Roosevelt closed regular-season play in the OIA with a perfect 11-0 mark. Keala Quinlan, a 6-foot junior, was a force on both ends of the court with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.
All six swats came in the third quarter as coach Hinano Higa’s squad took command. Quinlan scored almost immediately with a strong move in the low post for a bucket, then turned a block into a layup. Starr Rivera (11 points) sank a baseline jumper before Quinlan started another fastbreak with a block on Kaiser center Brooke Ho. Sharice Kawakami’s layup made it a 14-point lead, and after Rivera added another transition layup, the Rough Riders led 40-24. Quinlan had five of her six blocks in less than a three-minute span.
"We tried to win for Senior Night, but Kaiser is very competitive," Quinlan said. "Brooke kept coming at me. Her coach was yelling at her to (attack) inside. She’s good."
Kaiser guard Natasha Horn ended the 14-4 run by swishing a trey from the left wing. The visitors battled and got within 46-37 on two foul shots by Chelsea Soong just before the end of the third quarter.
Kaiser got no closer. Roosevelt was simply too constant with its full-court pressure, and the Cougars finished with more turnovers (24) than field goals. Kaiser shot 11-for-49 from the field and 18-for-35 at the free-throw line.
"We match up pretty good with them, but once they use their bench, it’s very tough for us and for any team," Kaiser coach Simon Bitanga said. "I’m surprised we stayed that close."
Starting guard Macy Hiraki is due back from a knee injury and could’ve played on Thursday. Bitanga opted to save her for the upcoming playoffs. Kaiser, 9-2 in OIA play, has a good chance to qualify for the state tourney.
Roosevelt came out firing, hitting 10 of its 21 field-goal attempts in the first quarter alone. The home team led 23-12 entering the second quarter, then went stone cold in the second quarter with 2-for-21 shooting.
Kaiser switched up defenses in the second quarter, hoping to cool off Rivera and Quinlan. The Cougars got into the bonus early and chipped away, hitting 10 of their 16 charity shots and getting within 26-21 late in the first half.
Without Hiraki, though, the speedy Cougars began to run out of gas in the second half.
Junior guard Brandi Baker scored 10 first-half points and finished with a team-high 13 for Kaiser. Ho, a 5-11 junior, finished with 12 points and 10 boards, and Rose Shimaoka added 10 points.
Roosevelt also got eight points from Kawakami, who sat almost the entire first half with foul trouble. The Rough Riders shot 33 percent from the field (25-for-75) and 7-for-15 from the foul line. They outrebounded Kaiser 46-42, including 23 caroms on the offensive glass.
