Suspect is charged in fatal stabbing
Hawaii County police have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of Brian Whetten in Hilo on Tuesday.
Garrett Dahlin, of Honomu, was charged with second-degree murder on Saturday at 11 a.m., police said. His bail is set at $250,000.
He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance Monday.
Three other suspects, a 21-year-old man and two women ages 22 and 28, were also arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder at their Honomu home Thursday but were released pending further investigation, police said.
Whetten, 43, who had no permanent address, was found Tuesday with stab wounds in a drugstore parking lot off Kilauea Avenue. He died later at Hilo Medical Center.
Man’s arrest tied to December homicide
A Paia man is facing second-degree murder charges after police arrested him in connection with the death of a man in Haiku.
Jessie Hueu, 44, was arrested on Friday around 5:15 p.m. in connection with Derrick Kualaau’s death on Dec. 10 in Maliko Gulch, Maui police said.
Hueu has been charged and his bail is set at $1,000,000.
No other information is available at this time.
Fight leads to near drowning in stream
An apparent altercation on River Street on Friday evening resulted in one man nearly drowning in nearby Nuuanu Stream.
Firefighters responding to a 9:43 p.m. call found two men in the stream. One man was unconscious and had to be pulled out by firefighters.
The other man was able to get out of the water on his own, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. James Todd.
Firefighters performed CPR on the unconscious man before transferring him to the care of paramedics. The man was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center; his condition was not disclosed.
