Maryknoll avenged a one-point loss to Punahou early in the ILH season by handing the second-ranked Buffanblu their first loss in league play with a 55-46 victory on Tuesday at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Admittedly "not aggressive at all" in the first half of the rematch, Maryknoll sophomore Justice Sueing scored 17 of his game-high 24 points after halftime and No. 10 Maryknoll continued to climb back into the ILH Division I boys basketball race.
After losing four of their first five league games by a total of six points, the Spartans improved to 3-4 by following up Saturday’s win over No. 6 Saint Louis with Tuesday’s win at Punahou (6-1).
"We know we shouldn’t have lost those games," Sueing said. "We’ve been picking it up and our motivation keeps going up."
Center Brian Washington, a 6-foot-5 freshman, paced the Spartans early on with 12 points and nine rebounds in the first half. Sueing, who drained two 3-pointers in the first half, finished off the victory by attacking the basket in the second half and went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
"(In the first half) They were keeping me out to the paint and forcing me to take jump shots," Sueing said. "The second half I was able to break the defense down more and get my teammates open and myself too."
Having survived a 53-52 battle with Maryknoll on Jan. 10, Punahou coach Darren Matsuda knew the Spartans’ 2-4 record entering Tuesday’s rematch wasn’t indicative of their potential.
"I think they improved a lot. They were sharper and they were the better team tonight," Matsuda said.
"Maryknoll’s probably playing better or just as good as anybody right now. … I think (the Spartans’ close losses) had to do with their youth and now they’re maturing a lot and they’re playing really sharp."
Maryknoll’s guards repeatedly found Washington open in the post and the freshman delivered for the Spartans as they built a 25-19 lead going into halftime.
"He never had his hands up in the beginning of the season and a lot of balls would go right by him," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "Now he knows when he goes to the basket he’s ready because we’re going to give him the ball. When he gets the ball in the paint he’s tough to defend."
Punahou countered with the inside scoring of ‘Akahi Troske, who led the Buffanblu with 15 points. But his minutes in the second half were limited by foul trouble.
Punahou erased Maryknoll’s halftime lead with a
6-0 run to open the third quarter. But Sage Pulu hit a 3-pointer from the top and the Spartans protected the lead from that point led by Sueing.
Maryknoll next faces Mid-Pacific, which also edged the Spartans by a point in their first meeting, on Saturday. Matsuda said several Punahou players have been fighting through illnesses and the Buffanblu will look to bounce back against Saint Louis on Saturday.
"We have to go back to the drawing board, work hard, come to practice and put our hard hats on," Matsuda said.
