Moniz wins Sunset Beach Pro Junior
Honolulu’s Seth Moniz clinched the Sunset Beach Pro Junior Men’s in 12- to 15-foot wave face heights on Wednesday.
Moniz, 17, scored 15.15 points to defeat Soli Bailey, Lucas Silveira, and Glenn Daniel. Moniz, who also won the Pipe Juniors in 2014, is scheduled to compete in the Volcom Pipe Pro at Banzai Pipeline on Thursday.
Kozlov advances in Lahaina Challenger
Sixteen-year-old Stefan Kozlov defeated Sekou Bangoura 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Royal Lahaina Challenger on Wednesday at Royal Lahaina Resort.
Kozlov, who reached the finals in the 2014 Jr. Wimbledon in both singles and doubles, earned a main draw wildcard into the tournament. He is set to face veteran Michael Russell in the second round.
Other singles’ winners include No. 1 seed Denis Kudla and the defending singles champion Bradley Klahn. Nicolas Meister also earned wins on both the singles and doubles courts.
Wehnelt named Big West Athlete of Week
University of Hawaii men’s tennis player Kai Wehnelt earned Big West Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday. Wehnelt, a sophomore from Berlin, partnered with Marcel Chan to defeat Pacific twice on the doubles court last week.
Wehnelt also earned wins on the No. 2 singles and doubles court in a 6-1 rout at Seattle on Wednesday. He is just the third Rainbow Warrior to earn the weekly award.
Amateur boxing at Palolo
Boxers from Oahu and Maui are scheduled to compete in Saturday’s amateur boxing event at Palolo District Park, including what is believed to be the first fight between masters women in Hawaii.
Making their ring debuts are Sue Namiki of Kawano Boxing and Adrian Miyake (unattached). The 17-fight card begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door.
Roller derby at Palama
Some 60 skaters, including several from Team USA, will compete Saturday at Pacific Roller Derby’s 7th SK808 Roller Derby Tournament at Palama Settlement Gym.
The round-robin style tournament also will pit male against female skaters for the first time. Doors open at 8 a.m. with bouts beginning at 8:30 a.m. General admission is $10 cash at the door.
Kanaka Ikaika season continues
The Outrigger Zone- Kai Wa‘a Kualoa Challenge, the third event of the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association season, is Saturday.
The 6-mile short course is from Heeia Pier to Kualoa Beach and the 12-mile course is from Kailua Beach to Kualoa Beach, both starting at 10 a.m. Divisions offered are OC-6, OC-3, OC-2 and OC-1; V-1, surfski and standup and prone paddleboard.
The long-course race is the opener for the Scott Hawaii Gold Challenge, where paddlers earn points toward gold coins when racing various paddle craft in designated races.
Pre-registration is $30 and accepted at the Foti store in Kapaa Quarry or online until midnight Friday. Late registration of $35 will be taken during Saturday’s check-in at Kailua Beach Park from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m.
