School locked down during police search
Classes resumed Thursday at Waialua Elementary School for 580 students after a lockdown stemming from a police search for a suspected car thief near the school.
Police arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of car theft just before 8:20 a.m. Thursday near the school after the search involving the police SWAT team, dogs, and Waialua patrol officers.
The search for the suspect started in the Waialua area before classes at the campus began at 7:55 a.m., Department of Education officials said.
Children who arrived at school were kept in the cafeteria until teachers picked them up and escorted them to their classrooms.
The school was placed in lockdown until the police issued an all-clear notice following the arrest.
Death caused by SUV accident injuries
The city Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday a 38-year-old homeless man died of blunt force injuries to his head when he was struck by a sport utility vehicle in Kalihi Valley nearly six months ago.
The medical examiner identified the victim Thursday as Ranaj Joab of Honolulu. who was killed Aug. 20 at about 9:50 p.m. while crossing Kalihi Street near Manaiki Place. Police said the victim was caught under the black Envoy SUV, driven by a 24-year-old man, was dragged several blocks and died at the scene.
Officers arrested the 24-year-old SUV driver on suspicion of third-degree negligent homicide. He was later released pending further investigation.
Knife-wielding robbers strike near Capitol
Two people were arrested Wednesday after a man was robbed at knifepoint near the state Capitol.
Sheriff deputies and Honolulu police made the arrests and have turned the case over to the attorney general’s office for further investigation.
According to the Department of Pubic Safety, at about 3:30 p.m. a deputy on the fourth floor of the state Capitol heard a commotion on the ground level and notified other deputies who responded to the Hotel Street Mall area.
The victim reported that he was robbed at knifepoint by two men.
Honolulu police were notified and began searching the area along with deputies.
Deputies located one of the suspects, a 23-year-old man, and police found the other suspect, a 45-year-old man.
