It was one last game at home for senior Jerri Maluyo.
She gave Leilehua fans a performance to remember. The point guard scored 27 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished six assists and had seven steals as Leilehua routed Moanalua 72-41 on Friday night at the Mules’ gym.
The play-in win advanced Leilehua (9-2) into the quarterfinal round of the OIA playoffs. The Mules, the fourth seed from the OIA West, will visit the East’s top team, Roosevelt, at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Maluyo was often a blur in transition, capitalizing on steals and passes from her teammates for breakaway layups.
“We prepared for this the whole week. Coach was pounding us at practice and we were running a lot. The press is our Energizer bunny. I live for defense,” Maluyo said.
Junior forward Tywanna Abbott added 20 points, eight boards and two blocks, and junior guard Jazmina Lafitaga tallied nine points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Mules.
Syndie Canencia paced Moanalua (7-5) with 12 points and six caroms.
The victory dissipated any doubt that the West side had as much competitive edge as the East. Leilehua finished regular-season play tied for second place with Radford and Mililani, but the Mules lost out on the tiebreaker formula. Moanalua, the fifth-place team in the East, turned out to be no match.
Lafitaga scored two quick layups off her team’s tough pressure defense as the home team took a 6-0 lead, forcing the visitors to call time out. After Lafitaga scored off a steal, Maluyo scored seven points in a row — two baskets on fast breaks and a corner 3 — for a 15-0 lead.
