UH track athletes shine in Washington
For the second consecutive day, the University of Hawaii track and field team posted stellar marks at the University of Washington Invitational.
On Saturday, the Rainbow Wahine recorded one school record and seven personal bests.
Senior Zhane Santiago was the top collegiate finisher in the 60-meter hurdles with a PR and UH-record time of 8.51 seconds that she posted in the qualifying round. In the finals, she finished 1/100th of a second behind Olympian Sharon Day-Monroe to place third. Santiago broke her own UH record of 8.59 seconds, which she established in 2013.
Senior Alex Porlier Langlois posted her second PR in as many days. On Saturday, she heaved 50-7.25 (15.42m) in the shot put, easily outdistancing her previous best of 45-10.5 (13.98m), which she set in 2012. The mark was good for third overall and second-best among collegians.
Freshman Montana Martinez ran a 5:07.65 mile, which placed her in the school’s top-10 list at No. 8.
Also posting PRs on Saturday were Desiree Winters in the 60 meters (8.06), Felicianna Vasquez in the 60-meter hurdles (9.50), and both Kayla Phillips (36-6.75/11.14m) and Rachel Toliver (39-7.25/12.07m) in the triple jump.
Sharks come up short in men’s basketball
Troy Leaf made one of two free throws with five seconds left as Azusa Pacific edged Hawaii Pacific 77-74 in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Leaf had a game-high 21 points for the Cougars (18-3, 11-3 PacWest).
Luke Hager lead four players in double figures for the Sharks (13-6, 8-5) with 19 points. Darry Jones Jr. added 16 points, Justin Long had 15 and Clayton Guy 10.
» Scott Friel scored 20 points, Pablo Coro and Daniel Berger each added 19 and Jordan Stone had 18 as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat California Baptist 100-87 at the Cannon Activities Center.
The Seasiders improved to 17-2 overall and 11-2 in the PacWest.
Gelaun Wheelwright finished with 20 points and Michael Smith added 19 for the Lancers (15-4, 9-3).
HPU women suffer first PacWest loss
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team suffered its first Pacific West Conference defeat of the season Saturday, falling to Azusa Pacific 78-67 at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Chenise Peone’s 17 points and career-high 17 rebounds wasn’t enough for the Sharks, who fell to 17-3 and 12-1 in the PacWest.
Kelly Hardeman led all scorers with 20 points for the Cougars (13-7, 9-4).
» Kennedi Akana hit a tie-breaking jumper with 5 seconds remaining to lift the Chaminade women’s basketball team to a 58-56 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Saturday in Hilo.
Akana finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Glacen Florita added 13 points for the Silverswords (4-11, 4-7).
The Vulcans (7-9, 6-6) were led by McKenzie Mangino, who had 13 points, and Hayley Reynolds with 11.
» Darsha Burnside had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Kamille Diaz added 16 points as Cal Baptist beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 87-53 at the Cannon Activities Center.
The Lancers improved to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in the PacWest.
Celeste Claw finished with 14 points and nine assists for the Seasiders (12-7, 9-4).
UH men’s tennis team falls in San Diego
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team dropped two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches against No. 41-ranked San Diego on Saturday at the Skip and Cindy Hogen Tennis Center in San Diego.
Hawaii’s Chas Okomoto teamed with Felix Albert to defeat Patrick Hall and James Ponwith 6-1 in a doubles match, then defeated Jordan Angus 6-3, 7-5 in his singles match.
Carter Lam also won his singles match, 6-4, 7-5 over Romain Kalaydjian.
Royal Lahaina Challenger finals set
Jared Donaldson beat No. 2 seed and defending champion Bradley Klahn 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals of the Royal Lahaina Challenger tennis tournament on Saturday.
In the other semifinal, qualifier Nicolas Meister defeated James McGee 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Chase Buchanan and Rhyne Williams beat fellow Americans Meister and Daniel Nguyen 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in a doubles semifinal match.
Buchanan and Williams will face fellow Americans Donaldson and Stefan Kozlov in the doubles final.
