Near-drowing sends surfer to hospital
A 25-year-old man was in critical condition following an apparent near-drowning incident near Ehukai Beach Park on Monday afternoon.
According to an Emergency Medical Services report, the surfer was found unresponsive in the water at about 2:20 p.m. and was brought to shore by lifeguards on a watercraft with the assistance of surfers.
Lifeguards performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man until paramedics arrived at the beach on Oahu’s North Shore. The man was transported to a hospital.
Whale-watching boat runs aground
A 65-foot Pacific Whale Foundation vessel ran aground near the Lahaina Harbor channel entrance Monday afternoon.
Maui County firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel responding to a 3:35 p.m. emergency call found the Ocean Discovery on the north side of the harbor channel and helped the crew secure anchor lines to prevent the vessel from drifting farther to shore.
All passengers had been safely escorted off the boat prior to the first responders’ arrival.
No injuries were reported, and there was no evidence of fuel leaking from the vessel.
Spate of dumpster fires called suspicious
Authorities are investigating five suspicious dumpster fires that were reported in little over an hour and within a one-block area early Monday morning in Kakaako.
The first dumpster fire was reported at 3:10 a.m. at 1066 Waimanu St.
The other fires, ending at 4:18 a.m., were reported on Kawaiahao Street; the corner of Waimanu and Kamakee streets; 1236 Waimanu St.; and the corner of Piikoi and Hopaka streets.
There were no extensive property damage other than to the dumpsters, fire official said. No injuries were reported.
