Weekend freeway construction resumes this weekend, with likely traffic jams for westbound motorists.
After taking Super Bowl weekend off, cement work resumes Saturday night on the Ewa-bound H-1 freeway from Aiea to Waipahu.
Other freeway work this weekend will close major offramps and onramps in town and lanes on the airport viaduct.
Two to three right lanes on the Ewa-bound H-1 freeway between the Kaamilo Street overpass and the Waipahu offramp will be shut down at 9 p.m. Saturday through 7 p.m. Sunday for a concrete pour.
The three right lanes will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Saturday through 11 a.m. Sunday as crews pour the concrete. The closure will then be reduced to two right lanes from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. Sunday as the concrete hardens.
Traffic backed up for miles two weekends ago during a similar concrete pour.
Motorists are asked to drive slowly through the area to provide a safe work zone for construction crews and to minimize vibration that could affect the hardening concrete.
People who have to drive west on the freeway are advised to adjust their schedules, expect delays and consider alternate routes such as Kamehameha Highway and Moanalua Road.
Town-bound motorists could also see some traffic delays on the airport viaduct of the H-1 freeway.
Three eastbound lanes were scheduled to be closed from 9 p.m. Friday through 4:30 a.m. Monday for concrete deck replacements, expansion joint repairs and pavement re-striping between the Pearl Harbor and Keehi interchanges.
Motorists are advised to use Nimitz Highway as an alternate route. The shoulder lane will also be open for use during the lane closure hours.
The Department of Transportation is also closing streets, freeway onramps and offramps leading downtown from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday for pavement markings and utility installations on Vineyard Boulevard.
In the Ewa direction, the Vineyard Boulevard offramp, Punchbowl Street onramp and Punchbowl Street mauka of Vineyard Boulevard will be closed.
The eastbound Punchbowl Street offramp and the Pali Highway ramp to Punchbowl Street will also be closed.
Westbound motorists heading downtown should take the Lunalilo Street offramp to Pensacola Street and Beretania Street or Ala Moana Boulevard as alternate routes.
Motorists looking to get on the freeway in the Ewa direction should take Vineyard Boulevard to the Halona Street onramp.
Eastbound motorists going downtown should take the Pali Highway or Vineyard Boulevard onramps as alternate routes.
Pali Highway motorists wishing to access Punchbowl Street are advised to stay on Pali Highway and use Vineyard Boulevard or South King Street as alternate routes.
In Central Oahu, Kamehameha Highway will be closed nightly in both directions between Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana Avenue starting Sunday night through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for road reconstruction, resurfacing and installation of striping and markers.
General traffic will be rerouted to the H-2 freeway, but local traffic access for Kipapa Gulch residents has been coordinated to be escorted through the project site as needed.
