Maybe it was the nerves of senior night. 

Whatever it was, the Leilehua Mules finally got down to business in the second half with a 14-3 run to topple Campbell 46-35 on Friday night to finish the OIA West season unbeaten.

Fifth-ranked Leilehua (10-0) and No. 8 Campbell (9-1) had already sealed first-round berths in the upcoming league tournament.

Joseph Gouty, who went scoreless in a defensive struggle during the first half, scored all of his game-high 17 points after the break. Gouty scored eight points during the Mules’ third-quarter run. David Tibayan hustled for nine points and eight rebounds. 

"The fans, the intensity, being undefeated. Our coach told us at halftime to zone everything out, play the Leilehua way, play with humility," said Gouty, a junior guard. 

The Mules were especially effective at the free-throw line, hitting seven of eight there in the third and 20 of 26 in the game. It was a hearty effort defensively by the Mules, including some of their senior contributors. 

"To me, our seven seniors are the most selfless bunch of kids I’ve had," coach Patrick Wetzel said. "We have a lot of juniors who’ve played a lot, but our seniors give their all at practice and compete. They really think more of the team than themselves." 

David Marrero, a 6-foot-5 senior, led Campbell with 14 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. 

Gouty’s drive to the bucket got the home team and a robust student turnout fired up to start the second half. He hit a foul shot and added a 3-pointer from the left wing as a 15-all halftime score turned into a six-point lead. 

Campbell’s Michael Merchant went coast-to-coast for a layup to end his team’s scoring drought, but David Tibayan scored on a pass from Koa Kauhi and Anterrio Gainwell hit two foul shots to push the lead to eight points, Leilehua’s largest of the game. 

Gouty hit two more foul shots and Jayeson Baine hit two more as the home team took a 29-18 lead into the final quarter. 

Campbell shot 1-for-13 from the field in the third stanza against Leilehua’s mix of man and 2-3 zone defenses. 

The visitors trailed by 10 midway through the final quarter when Jomar Gapusan hit a baseline jumper to spark a mini-run. Marrero hustled for a putback and Lamart Dudley battled for a follow shot, bringing the Sabers within 35-31 with less than four minutes left. 

But the Mules went into delay mode and ate more than two minutes off the clock. After Alphonso Gamble sank a free throw and Gouty scored off a steal, the lead was 38-31. 

Marrero hit one of two free throws to bring Campbell within 39-34 in 1:18 to go, but the Sabers got no closer. 

Campbell finished the game with 21 percent shooting from the field (12-for-56), missing all 22 3-point tries. The Sabers outrebounded Leilehua 33-30, but were hampered by 10 turnovers in the first half. 

Leilehua overcame its slow start — 1-for-10 from the field in the first half — to shoot 31 percent overall (12-for-39). 

"We’ve got to go to work," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "We’ve got to work on a lot of things, but it’s hard to go back and get mad at these guys. They’re such good kids. Leilehua did a great job. We just didn’t show up to play or finish."

Tau says he won’t forget their nine-game win streak so quickly.

"It was one of those nights when everything we shot was spinning out. They did a good job for nine games. It just wasn’t there tonight," he said. "But if we do this again, we’ll be in a hole. Knowing our kids, they’ll bounce back."
