The University of Hawaii said it has yet to close its inquiry into an allegation that marijuana smoke in the rooms assigned to members of its men’s basketball team was responsible for $500 in hotel fees.
"We’re just following through waiting on some additional information," athletic director Ben Jay said Monday. Citing student privacy laws, Jay said, "I can’t discuss anything further."
Head coach Benjy Taylor declined comment.
Last month UH said it was looking into allegations stemming from the team’s stay at the Riverside Marriott Convention Center surrounding a Jan. 17 loss to UC Riverside.
Reportedly a smoke alarm in a non-smoking room alerted security to one incident.
A manager at the hotel has declined comment. The Marriott website lists a "room recovery fee for guests who do not comply in order to cover the extensive cost of restoring guest rooms to a smoke-free condition."
UH said the fee is $250 per room.
The UH Student-Athlete Handbook says the athletic department may drug test athletes and suspend those found in violation. Jay declined to say how many players had been tested or reveal the results.
Although Jay declined to discuss the Riverside allegation directly, he said, in general terms, "persons involved (in hotel damage incidents) are personally responsible" for charges.
