The 62-year-old bicyclist who was hit by a car earlier this month has been identified as David Niau of Honolulu, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Niau died Monday.
Chad Taniguchi, a 1970 classmate of Niau’s at Waimea High School on Kauai, said Niau was a condominium property manager and former cruise ship entertainer.
Niau was a "spark-plug" organizer of a recent class reunion in Kekaha and was known for his personable manner and enthusiasm.
"He led us to sing the school alma mater. He was a really good host," Taniguchi said. "He enjoyed making people happy."
Taniguchi, executive director of the Hawaii Bicycling League, said Niau enjoyed bicycling.
Taniguchi said that it’s unfortunate when anyone dies on the street, because his group feels the street could be made safe.
"Our vision as an organization is for zero deaths on the street," he said.
Niau was riding on Nuuanu Avenue near Judd Street when he was hit by a car at 10:20 p.m. Feb. 1, Honolulu police said.
Niau, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken in critical condition to a hospital.
His death marked Oahu’s 11th traffic fatality of 2015, compared with 10 for the same period in 2014.
