‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto wouldn’t allow himself a deep breath until the clock finally hit zero.
To his relief, the Raiders managed to fend off a last-minute Maryknoll rally and the 62-56 senior night victory will afford them a little more time to relax heading into the ILH tournament.
Four ‘Iolani players scored in double figures led by Zack Gelacio’s game-high 18 points, and the Raiders (7-3) clinched second place in the ILH Division I boys basketball standings and a bye in the first round of the upcoming league tournament.
"Huge, it has a lot of implications," Shimamoto said of placing second in the regular season. "Potentially it can help us get a state berth, it gives us a bye.
"The first round of the tournament everyone’s beating everyone, so that bye is a little bit of a relief."
Along with Gelacio’s production, which included a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that gave ‘Iolani some separation, senior guard Erik Yamada scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, Pikai Winchester hit two 3-pointers in a 13-point effort and center Hugh Hogland sparked the Raiders with 12 points in the second half.
"That’s exactly how we want it," Shimamoto said of the balanced scoring night. "That’s ‘Iolani basketball."
Punahou wrapped up the regular-season title and a state tournament berth last week. Maryknoll could have tied ‘Iolani for second place with a win on Tuesday. But the Spartans couldn’t quite complete a comeback after the Raiders stretched a four-point lead after the third quarter to 12 in the fourth.
‘Iolani led by 11 with 1:02 left, but Maryknoll went on a 9-2 run over the next 36 seconds with Saige Pulu hitting two 3-pointers to cut the lead to four. The Spartans had a chance to creep even closer after an ‘Iolani turnover, but their scrambling attempts at another 3-pointer came up short and Maryknoll (5-5) will open the ILH tournament with a home game on Saturday.
Guard Justice Sueing and freshman center Brian Washington finished with 15 points each for the Spartans, who closed the regular season tied with Saint Louis for third. A coin flip will determine their tournament seeding.
Sueing had been dominant during Maryknoll’s four-game winning streak heading into the regular-season finale and ‘Iolani senior Bryson Hamada spent most of his night shadowing the 6-5 sophomore’s every move.
"They took us out of our game a little bit with the full denial of Justice and once Justice gets the ball they just pack the thing in," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said, noting the Raiders used a similar strategy in past seasons when the Spartans featured All-State forward Josh Burnett and guard Kaleb Gilmore, who has since transferred to Kalaheo.
"So it’s not like we never saw this kind of defense before, we just have to make adjustments. We had opportunities. Saige hit some big shots down the stretch. ‘Iolani played better than us tonight."
Maryknoll took a 20-19 lead into halftime and ‘Iolani went inside to Hogland right away and he responded with six points in the first 2:45 of the third quarter.
"I came out the second half finally remembering what I was supposed to do and my teammates and the seniors gave me the inspiration," Hogland said.
Early in the fourth quarter, Hogland grabbed an offensive rebound and passed it to Gelacio, who knocked down a 3-pointer to give ‘Iolani a 43-36 lead and momentum.
"He’s just stayed active and when he’s active he’s hard to stop," Shimamoto said of Hogland. "He’s a 6-8 guy who can move, who can finish. When he’s working to get boards, working for post position it takes a toll on the other team’s defense."
