Maryknoll got past scrappy, intense Hilo 70-66 in the Division I quarterfinals of the New City Nissan Girls Basketball State Championships on Wednesday night at Moanalua.
It wasn’t easy.
"We knew this was not going to be a cakewalk," said Chico Furtado, the coach of the ILH champion Spartans (12-1), who will play Lahainaluna on Thursday at McKinley.
"This is a team that has beaten seeded teams and been to the semifinals two years in a row. They had so many perimeter guards that we had to watch out for and so we went with a smaller rotation."
The Vikings (11-2), the second-place team from the BIIF, held a 26-20 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Spartans kept chipping away and, after several lead changes, gained some valuable momentum when Lindsey Lee fired up a 3-pointer for a 50-50 tie at the end of three quarters.
It was close from there and Lee struck again with a 3-pointer with 3:45 to go for a 61-58 lead, one that Maryknoll did not relinquish.
With its trademark all-out effort, Hilo made it close when Shalyn Guthier delivered a trey to make it 68-66.
On a last-gasp drive by Faith Katie Loeak, a Maryknoll player knocked the ball out of bounds with six seconds left and the Vikings never got another good look at the basket.
Guthier hit from all over the court on her way to a game-high 25 points.
But the Vikings had no real answer for Maryknoll post Maegan Martin, who scored 11 of her 21 points in the second half, including nine in the third quarter. She also had 11 rebounds.
"We missed a lot of layups early and that hurt us," Vikings coach Ben Pana said. "I don’t expect anything less than what our girls gave tonight. They gave it their all. The funny thing is we’ve got nine of these girls coming back next year."
Guthier was tasked to cover Martin, but, due to the lack of size on the team, she wasn’t able to get the help defense she needed.
"It’s not over yet," Guthier said. "We’ve got a couple of games left. A game is a game, even if it is a consolation game. We’re still going to play all out."
Hilo’s Alexis Pana fouled out with 6:46 to go and that hurt the Vikings’ comeback chances. She had nine points and was a key floor leader.
Alexis Delovio scored 16 points for Maryknoll. Her clutch five fourth-quarter points came within the last minute and a half.
Furtado was disappointed that Maryknoll gave up 66 points.
"We usually try to hold teams to the high 30s or low 40s," he said.
