The city is imposing new parking restrictions in Lanikai this Presidents Day weekend in an attempt to ease the kind of traffic congestion that created hourslong, bumper-to-bumper snarls during the Christmas holiday.
There is only one way in and one way out of Lanikai, and hundreds flock to the area’s beaches. Restricting parking in the neighborhood will significantly reduce parking capacity by up to half, city officials said.
Parking will not be allowed on the right side of the so-called Lanikai loop in an effort to ensure access for emergency vehicles, residents and visitors. The restriction will test a proposal to permanently remove parking on the bike-lane side of the loop.
Motorists who park on the right side of the loop will be cited, and their vehicles will be towed.
The city Department of Transportation Services notified residents that new barriers will be in place over the weekend on Aalapapa and Mokulua drives.
Parking is always prohibited in the bike lane, with a possible fine of $200.
"The city is taking this action because traffic congestion in Lanikai has become so severe on holidays and weekends that it is now a safety issue," said Transportation Services Director Mike Formby.
"During severe traffic congestion caused in part by illegally parked cars and pedestrians forced into the roadway, emergency first responders have experienced difficulty getting into and out of Lanikai. This is a test over the holiday weekend that the city will consider making permanent, if effective."
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead; to consider alternative means to access the Lanikai beach area, such as by riding TheBus, walking and/or biking; or seek alternative beaches for recreation.
