Losses hurt in different ways.
There’s the disappointment of playing poorly in a blowout and the heartbreak of letting a lead slip away late.
Hawaii has opened the 2015 baseball season feeling the pain of both as No. 16 Oregon continues to have the Rainbow Warriors’ number.
UH bounced back from Friday’s ugly loss to take a lead into the eighth inning before Nick Catalano’s two-run homer gave the Ducks a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,157 fans who braved the wet, windy weather at Les Murakami Stadium.
Hawaii led 2-1 on RBI singles by Jordan Richartz and Chayce Ka‘aua when Catalano, who hadn’t homered in 127 career at-bats, poked a 1-2 pitch from reliever Andrew Jones that carried over the wall in left-center to swing the game.
"The tough thing is it was a good pitch. Catalano went down and got it," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "It’s gut-wrenching how bad we played (Friday) night and so you get zero sleep when you play that bad and then today, it’s gut-wrenching in a different way because it was a game you had a chance to get."
UH (0-2) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth against Oregon closer Garrett Cleavinger.
Hawaii was one ball away from tying the game when Ka‘aua took a 3-2 fastball inside for a called third strike. Cleavinger then got Jonathan Weeks to ground out to Mark Karaviotis at short to extend Oregon’s winning streak against Hawaii to 13.
"We’ve won a lot of games in the seventh, eighth and ninth (innings) and when you have that history … you kind of have that confidence," Oregon coach George Horton said.
The Ducks (2-0) have taken advantage of the Kona winds this weekend, hitting three homers out to left, which is rare in this ballpark.
Kaeo Aliviado drove a ball to the track in right-center in the bottom of the eighth that came close to tying the game.
"If he hits that ball with the regular tradewinds, it might go over the fence," Horton said. "Then with the Kona winds and our guy going out over there, we feel very fortunate."
UH wasted a strong outing from sophomore left-hander Quintin Torres-Costa, who struck out a career-high eight in six innings.
Torres-Costa recorded all eight of his punchouts in the first four innings. He gave up his only run on Steven Packard’s RBI double in the fourth inning that got under the glove of a diving Weeks in left, allowing Karaviotis to score from first.
"That’s just a freshman mistake," Trapasso said. "With a runner on first and two outs you can’t leave your feet on a ball like that. It’s a mistake from being aggressive."
Torres-Costa gave up five hits and three walks but battled out of jams with the strikeouts and a strong defense behind him that made some key plays.
"I was throwing my pitches where I wanted to go and everyone around me was supporting me," Torres-Costa said. "I felt like I needed to work on a couple of off-speed (pitches), but I’d say it was a quality outing for me today. We just need to get a win next time."
Torres-Costa and Ka‘aua combined for possibly the first all-Big Island battery in UH history.
Ka‘aua, who graduated from Hilo High, gave Torres-Costa, a Waiakea graduate, the lead with a two-out RBI single in the fourth to score Marcus Doi with his first college hit.
"It hurts a lot. We wanted it, but we still have two more games," Ka‘aua said. "(Torres-Costa) has gotten way better since his surgery and I expect to see that from him every time from now on."
Oregon freshman Daniel Peterson allowed two hits in six innings with two walks and eight strikeouts in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Stephen Nogosek worked two perfect innings of relief to earn the win.
Oregon’s top six hitters in the lineup were a combined 2-for-23 after batting 10-for-28 in the opener with nine runs scored.
Cody Culp relieved Jones with two outs in the eighth for UH and retired all four batters he faced.
Game 3 of the series is Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Junior L.J. Brewster makes his first career start for the ‘Bows.
