The Honolulu Star-Advertiser sports staff recently claimed a top 10 in the Associated Press Sports Editors awards for its work on the Marcus Mariota tab.
Published on Dec. 28, 2014, the 28-page tab won the award in the Special Sections, Category B, for newspapers with circulation of 75,001 to 175,000. A dozen people across the newsroom contributed to this work, with special recognition for managing editor/design Mike Rovner, deputy sports editor Curtis Murayama, columnists Ferd Lewis and Dave Reardon and illustrator Kip Aoki.
The tab focused on the life and times of Mariota, who not only quarterbacked Oregon to the CFP national championship game against eventual winner Ohio State, but also won the Heisman Trophy.
