Moped crash leaves rider critically injured
A man who was riding his moped on Lanakila Avenue in Liliha lost control of the vehicle and was thrown to the roadway and critically injured at 6:44 a.m. Sunday, police reported.
No one else was involved in the accident. The man was heading southwest on Lanakila Avenue, near the intersection with Laki Road. He was taken to the hospital. His age was not available.
Police are investigating the crash. It is not clear whether excessive speed or alcohol were contributing factors.
Wave knocks catamaran riders overboard
Authorities responded to Haleiwa Boat Harbor on Sunday afternoon after a catamaran was hit by a large wave, ejecting people into the water.
Ocean Safety officials saw the 40-foot catamaran, Ho‘o Nanea, get hit by 15- to 18-foot waves just before 11 a.m.
Lifeguards rescued the people onboard and brought them to shore. Several people were thrown overboard, officials said.
A 50-year-old woman was transported in stable condition to the hospital.
Paramedics treated five other patients but they refused transportation.
The North Shore is under a high-surf warning until 6 a.m. Monday.
