3 die, 1 injured in Maui ocean incidents
Three people died and another was left in critical condition Monday following three separate ocean-related incidents on Maui.
Maui fire rescue personnel recovered the bodies of a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman who drowned in waters at the "Chutes and Ladders" area north of Honokau Valley. According to Maui police, Emmanuel Tabbay, Edelene Parilla and two other friends were walking across rocks along the shoreline to reach a set of tide pools when Parilla was swept into the ocean by a wave. Tabbay jumped in the water in an attempt to save Parilla.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after 3 p.m., witnesses brought to shore the body of a 53-year-old man who was seen floating in waters off Makena Beach and Golf Resort. Witnesses performed CPR on the man until firefighters arrived, but the man could not be revived.
Less than a half hour later, witnesses pulled another unconscious man out of the water, this time in an area off of Kaanapali Ocean Resort. Firefighters and paramedics performed life-saving measures before transporting the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
