The University of Hawaii athletic department has concluded an investigation into allegations of marijuana use by members of its men’s basketball team on a road trip last month but says it won’t disclose whether players were sanctioned as a result.

UH said it received a $500 bill from the team’s hotel that alleged incidents in Riverside, Calif., and "It (the inquiry) has finished," athletic director Ben Jay said Wednesday. But citing confidentiality, Jay said, "I can’t comment on anything that has happened to our student-athletes."

Last month UH said it had begun an inquiry into separate $250 cleaning charges billed to two rooms assigned to its players at the Riverside Marriott Convention Center surrounding a Jan. 17 game against UC Riverside.

Reportedly a smoke alarm in a non-smoking room alerted security to one incident and housekeeping staff detected another.

The Marriott website lists a "room recovery fee for guests who do not comply in order to cover the extensive cost of restoring guests rooms to a smoke-free condition."

The UH Student-Athlete Handbook allows the department to drug test players and says it may suspend them from competition, but it is not mandatory after a first positive test.

As a general policy, UH has said players and staff involved in hotel damage incidents are responsible for charges. But Jay declined to say if bills will be presented to any players. in this case.
