A 55-year-old Hawaii island man who was set on fire allegedly by his estranged wife died Wednesday night at Straub Hospital.
Hawaii County police identified him as Ghenghis Khan Kaaihue of Holualoa.
Police initially opened an attempted murder investigation after a 53-year-old Kailua-Kona woman allegedly doused her estranged husband with gasoline and used a lighter to set both of them on fire near a Kailua-Kona beach park Sunday.
The case has been reclassified as second-degree murder.
They were flown to Straub Clinic & Hospital in Honolulu from Kona Community Hospital in critical condition with third-degree burns, police said.
The woman remains at Straub in critical condition.
The woman confronted her husband, who was with another woman in a van parked on the roadside at Kahaluu Beach Park in Kona, according to a police report.
Police said the wife poured gasoline on the van.
Kaaihue left the van and struggled with her, and gasoline ended up on their clothing and bodies, police said. Witnesses told police she used a lighter to set both herself and Kaaihue on fire.
An autopsy will be conducted.
