Jake Smith scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Farrington stunned No. 2-ranked Kahuku 48-44 to capture the OIA Division I boys basketball championship on Thursday night.
"Kahuku’s a great team and we needed some energy," Governors coach Allan Silva said after his team defended its OIA crown despite a severe height disadvantage. "The guys showed all guts and all brains at the end. They played smart."
"We had to stick in there and battle," Smith said. "Kahuku is a great team, but coming off two overtime games, we had to battle hard. Tua (Unutoa) played a tremendous game against Kalaheo and tonight, my boys backed me up."
Kahuku (16-4) jumped to an 11-2 lead and had Farrington on the ropes early, dominating with its 2-3 matchup zone. Now the Red Raiders will need to regroup for the state tourney.
"I’ll tell them they need to forget about it," coach Alan Akina said. "It’s the little stuff, the turnovers, missed free throws, and we were out of rhythm. We’ve just got to get ready for next week."
A wild gathering of about 1,500 fans at sweltering McKinley Student Council Gymnasium saw the game see-saw back and forth before Smith scored on a fastbreak 3-pointer from the left corner for a 45-44 lead with 39 seconds left. That shot came moments after Kahuku had taken a 44-42 lead on a lob to Samuta Avea.
After Smith’s go-ahead trey — his fourth of the game — Kahuku point guard Tama Green was whistled for an offensive foul on a fastbreak. The Governors then shredded Kahuku’s fullcourt pressure, with Tua Unutoa feeding Smith for a layup as 6-foot-7 Denhym Brooke closed in and barely missed on a block attempt.
Farrington had a 47-44 lead on the layup with 20 seconds to go. After Kahuku called time out with 13 ticks left, the ensuing play broke down when sharpshooter Keanu Akina was trapped in the left corner by the Govs. His pass out of trouble landed near midcourt, where Smith retrieved the ball and drew a foul with 4.7 seconds to play.
Smith hit the second of his two foul shots for a four-point lead, icing the win.
"When they went to that 1-3-1 (zone), that hurt them, I think," he said. "That’s when I hit those two 3s."
Ranan Mamiya added nine points and was a force of nature on Farrington’s 2-1-2 fullcourt press with four steals. Bryce Tatupu-Leopoldo added five points and 10 rebounds, a 5-10 forward going up against Kahuku’s front line of Brooke (6-7), Hyrum Harris (6-6) and Avea (6-5).
Akina led Kahuku with 10 points. Avea added nine points, Brooke had eight points and two boards, and Harris had six points and seven rebounds.
Kahuku committed 22 turnovers and shot 16-for-34 from the field.
Farrington won the battle on the boards, 19-17.
