BYU-Hawaii comes back to beat UH Hilo
The BYU-Hawaii women’s basketball team used a 10-1 second-half run to fend off visiting Hawaii Hilo, 63-60, Friday night in Laie.
Hayley Reynolds paced the Vulcans with a game-high 19 points, but the effort was not enough, as the Seasiders out-rebounded the visitors 43-26 and won the second-chance-points battle 16-4.
Bry Tatupu-Leopoldo and Kjirsten Nelson scored 14 points apiece and Mata Tonga pulled down 12 rebounds for BYU-Hawaii, which improved to 13-11 overall and 10-8 in the PacWest. UH Hilo fell to 8-13 and 6-10.
» On the men’s side, Daniel Berger converted 14 of 14 at the free-throw line to lead the Seasiders over the Vulcans 100-90 on Friday in Laie. Berger finished with a team-high 20 points, followed by Pablo Coro’s 17 points.
BYU-Hawaii (20-5, 14-5 PacWest) outrebounded Hawaii Hilo 38-28 and also recorded six more blocks (7-1). Vandyon Lockett led the Vulcans (10-14, 6-12 PacWest) with 24 points, while Tre Johnson added 18 points.
Hawaii golfers can’t catch Cal on Kauai
The University of Hawaii was well represented by three golf teams at the John Burns Intercollegiate, which ran Wednesday through Friday at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue.
UH Manoa’s "A" squad finished ninth overall with a combined score of 889, while UH Hilo (907) and UH Manoa’s "B" team finished 14th and 16th. California (852) won the event and held off New Mexico (859), UNLV (868) and Texas A&M (872), while BYU-Hawaii rounded out the 17-team field with 948.
Justin Chu (UH Manoa) led all Hawaii participants with a 4-over-par 220 to land him in a tie for 17th place. Cal’s Shotaro Ban won the individual title with an 8-under 208.
Oshiro collects weekly baseball accolade
Pearl City product and Hawaii Pacific senior Jordan Oshiro was named PacWest Co-Player of the Week following a seven-hit effort over five games against Northwest Nazarene.
The outfielder helped the Sharks go 3-2 in the series from the leadoff spot, posting a .412 average (7-for-17), including a double, five runs and two RBIs.
The former Charger was also a terror on the basepaths, stealing five bags in six attempts and posting a .524 on-base percentage in the series.
Lenz nets weekly tennis honor
Hawaii Pacific junior Marko Lenz was a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles competition en route to being named PacWest Men’s Player of the Week as the Sharks tennis team won their first three matches of the spring.
The native of Hannover, Germany, ended up winning three of his six total sets by a perfect 6-0 margin and surrendered just seven points in the three victories against Sonoma State, UC San Diego and UH Hilo.
HPU women’s hoops ranked sixth in West
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team is ranked a program-best sixth in the first NCAA Division II West Region poll, which was released Thursday.
The Sharks (21-4, 16-2 PacWest) are behind Alaska Anchorage, Seattle Pacific, California Baptist, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Humboldt State.
The top eight teams in the region at the end of the season will play for a berth in the national tournament.
