A former Honolulu soldier was charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child stemming from 2010 and will be brought back to Hawaii from New Mexico to face the charge, the FBI said.
FBI agents in Dexter, N.M., on Wednesday arrested Chason Colt Morgan, 29, as a result of a criminal complaint issued in U.S. District Court in Honolulu, Special Agent Tom Simon said.
According to an agent’s affidavit in support of the complaint, the alleged abuse of a 7-year-old girl occurred in 2010 at a home on Schofield Barracks.
Morgan had been discharged from the Army on May 27 of that year, the report said. The girl’s mother was hospitalized from Sept. 14 through 17, 2010, while she was an active-duty soldier, according to the affidavit.
Morgan was engaged to the woman and was the sole caregiver for the 7-year-old and her sibling while their mother was hospitalized, the agent said. The alleged abuse occurred during that time, the report said.
The federal crime of aggravated sexual abuse of a child carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, Simon said.
